Two colour small flower cakes with icing decorations 2

An experiment for my birthday! This is an easy-to-make, all-in-one sponge cake. If you have children this is an simple one for them to help with too πŸ™‚

Ingredients

  • 150 g self-raising flour
  • 150 g butter/margarine
  • 150 g caster sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • Food colouring of your choice/whatever’s at the back of the cupboard(!)
  • Icing sugar and water for decorations

Method

  • Grease and line a rectangular tin with baking paper. Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees C.
  • Put all the cake ingredients in a bowl/mixer and combine to form a smooth mixture.
  • Divide your mixture in 3 (or 2 or 4, depending on how many colours you want). Add food colouring to each part of your mixture. Spoon the 3 colours into your baking tray in blocks (see pic below).
  • Bake for about 20 minutes. As you can see from the pics, I gave mine about 2 minutes too long!

Slightly over-cooked at the edges as you can see…

  • Wait for the cake to cool. Then put it on a firm surface and use a sharp knife to divide the cake into the 3 different colour sections. Use a large flower cutter to cut out 6 large flowers. Then use a smaller flower cutter to cut little flower from the centre of each of the larger flowers.

  • Now put the small flowers you have cut out into the centres of different coloured larger flowers. A picture explains this better:

Smaller flower centres swapped over into different coloured larger flowers!

  • Finally, use white water icing (just icing sugar and water) to add some finishing decorations!

I piped some finishing white details onto the flowers to give them some personality!

Couldn’t stop taking picture of them!
